Surfing Tips for Students
The INTERNET opens up a whole world of information and social networking avenues.
Today’s education is incomplete without internet surfing. Most of you may not aware that there are certain ‘good practices’ to be followed in this virtual world just as one would in the real world. Being accessible to anyone with a computer, the World Wide Web is infested with impersonators and fraudulent activities. Therefore you need to observe certain online safety rules!
• Let your parents know when you are using the Internet – whether they lay down the rule or not.
• You are never anonymous on the Internet although it might feel that way. Your activities need to confirm to rules that are valid for your personal behaviour in society.
• Deal with strangers on the Internet exactly the way you would with a stranger in the real world.
• Be alert and inform your parents if someone or something on the Internet makes you feel uncomfortable. On your part, avoid doing things which you feel you can not discuss with your parents.
• Never ever give out personal information. Always consult your parents if you need to fill in details like phone numbers, house address etc.
• Never ask anyone you meet online to visit you at home or worse, anywhere else.
• Do not assume that a person you meet on a networking site ‘is’ what he or she claims to be. A 16-year-old girl might turn out to be a psychopathic 40-year-old man.
• Never accept any uncalled-for-gifts. Be suspicious of freebies or unexpected rewards that come to your email box.
• While surfing, never take any information at its face value. Verify and examine all the details.
• Do not give away your password to anybody.
• Do not gossip or stalk others even for fun. Respect other’s privacy.
